Hey loves! A lot of you have been asking for an updated twist out routine. I haven’t gotten around to making a video yet, but I wanted to post a pictorial of the steps to my twist out.

I am constantly switching up my products, but these are the products that I’ve been currently using. I’ve found that a setting lotion/foam is what gives my curls great definition. Not to mention my new found holy grail, the Denman brush ::insert praise hands:: Why didn’t y’all tell me about this brush sooner? Y’all don’t love me 😉

Below is a before picture of my hair after about a week in a half of not washing or twisting it. I used to do my twist out every three nights to keep it fresh, but once I started using a better combination of products, I only needed to twist it once and it gradually poofs throughout the week. If you like your curls consistently defined, then twist it up every 2-3 nights.

Ok let’s get started!

1. After shampooing, I use the Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner while still in the shower and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Conditioner is VERY important if you’re hair is colored. You need a lot of moisture to maintain healthy colored curls. I gently detangle my hair with a wide tooth comb, rinse the conditioner out, and I’m on to the next step.

2. I like to lightly blot my hair with a towel so it’s not soaking wet, otherwise it takes forever to dry. I apply a generous dollop of the Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner first, then a scoop of the Bouncy Curls Pudding and comb it through my hair.

3. Next I section my hair one part at a time and gently detangle it again with the Denman brush. This allows your curls to start with a great canvas before applying the next styling products.

4. I pump one pump of the Jane Carters Solution Wrap and Roll and apply it to the section, then two strand twist it. I use this product for the longer portion of my hair at the top. I’ll repeat this step all around the crown of my hair until it’s done.

5. Now around the back and sides of my hair, I use Miss Jessie’s Jelly Soft Curls. I like using the gel around this area because my curl pattern is tighter, and it keeps the hold and helps define my curls better.

This is what my twist out looks like after repeating these steps:

How do I sleep on it you ask?

Because my hair takes much longer than 8 hours to air dry when it’s twisted, I just take a blow dryer on the low setting and dry it for about 15 to 20 minutes. If you have a hooded dryer and an hour to spare, it’s much faster to just sit under the dryer. Do your nails or something while your waiting for it to dry. I pop a bonnet on and go to sleep!

When I wake up I apply a little Biosilk serum (not pictured) on my fingertips and unravel each section until they are all out. Then I take my fingers and fluff up the roots until it’s big enough to my satisfaction. That’s it! Simple! It looks like this when I’m done!

How do I sleep on it for the rest of the week you ask?

I SWEAR by my Hair-Routine Pillow Bonnet. It was given as a gift a little while ago and I sleep on it EVERY NIGHT! It’s 100% satin, pops on right over your pillow and is waterproof so it doesn’t get soaked throughout the night and it prevents frizz when I wake up. Again, I fluff it every morning and I’m good to go!

I hope this pictorial helps you ladies out when it comes to doing your two strand twist out at home! Be patient when creating your own personal product combination, because what works for my hair may not be the best for yours. It’s trial and error, so keep testing until you find what works for you!
